Tiny Ants, Big Lessons: The Secret to a Strong Team

Late-Lee, I’ve been thinkin’ a lot about what makes a team really work. You know, why one group of folks can move mountains while another can’t seem to organize a two-car parade.

The other day, I was strollin’ over to my daughter’s house – I’ve been on grand-dog duty while they’re off enjoyin’ the magic of Disney. As I was walkin’ along, something caught my eye. There was this big ol’ crack in the driveway. Not just a little crack, but one of those deep ones that, from an ant’s perspective, might as well be the Grand Canyon.

Most folks would’ve just stepped over it and gone about their business. But y’all know me—I had to stop and watch those little fellas. There they were, working like a bunch of tiny construction crews, movin’ pebbles and dirt, chewin’ right through the hard ground like it was nothin’. Ants don’t just wander around; they’ve got a system. Division of labor, clear communication, teamwork—it’s like they’ve got it all figured out better than half the committees I’ve ever sat on.

Each ant’s got a job. Some are off foragin’ for food, some are guardin’ the nest, and they all stay connected with these little pheromone trails, tellin’ each other where to go and what to do. It’s teamwork at its finest.

Kinda makes me think that next time we hit a roadblock, instead of throwin’ up our hands, we should just start workin’ together like those ants do—each one with a job, movin’ toward a common goal.

If a bunch of tiny bugs can chew through a gravel driveway, we oughta be able to get through a busy day without losin’ our marbles.

So next time your team hits a rough patch, just remember those little ants in my driveway—and get to work.

And if all else fails, just grab some sweet tea, roll up your sleeves, and get after it like you mean it.

Because at the end of the day, teamwork’s not about titles or talk—it’s about each of us showing up, doing our part, and helping each other push through whatever’s in the way.

About Me

Hi, I’m Rhonda Lee – educator, coach, writer, and the heart behind Late-Lee. I’ve spent decades in classrooms and leadership circles learning that the most powerful lessons don’t always come from textbooks or titles. They often show up in the quiet, unexpected moments of everyday life. Whether I’m reflecting on school leadership, guiding educators, or simply observing life through the lens of a mother, daughter, or friend, I write to connect. I believe leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being brave enough to keep showing up,to keep growing, and to keep listening. Late-Lee is where I share the lessons I didn’t know I was learning until I looked back. I hope you’ll find a bit of your own story in mine.
